In my office I have a dedicated space for a cool down corner. I can use this space for many things. First, it is a nice comfortable, inviting space in my office that immediately draws kids in. I have it arranged so my bookshelf with all my books are very accessible. It is interesting to see which books the kids reach for. Second, it is a great space to let kids just sit when their are overwhelmed. I have a comfy circle chair that kids can curl up in. Kids who are sad, overwhelmed or just plain tired can just take a few minutes to relax, clear their heads and sort through what they want to tell me. Finally, the most common use of my cool down corner is for kids who are very angry. the basket is filled with books on calming strategies to use when one is angry. It also has a glitter jar, rain maker and an angry dragon to help kids focus on breathing. I also like having the mirror mounted in this area for kids to see how they look when they are angry. Many kids do not understand how scary they may look to their peers. Seeing their facial expressions and body language helps them understand the reactions they may be getting from their friends and classmates.
